Cape Light

As a watercolorist I'm constantly looking for a fresh approach to familiar subjects. In the gallery we frequently have requests for "lighthouse" paintings and although there have been a few in my career it's been years since I've painted one. I've intentionally waited until I had a new and unique approach to a subject as ubiquitous in the art world as lighthouses.

Cape Arago Light sits on a small island on the central Oregon coast. To service the light and instruments the "keeper" has to cross a small bridge from the adjancent Coast Guard Station. When I happened across this vantage point I knew I'd found something special and worth painting.

For me there is a sense of discovery in this watercolor. It is the anticipation that as you walk closer to the flowers on the ridge, the rest of the lighthouse and its magnificent surroundings will open up to complete the story of this beautiful location.
