In addition to sketches, photographs and memories, I often bring some part of what I'm painting back into my studio to help complete the piece. In this case it was some of the grasses I was painting. I had some lying on the surface of the paper to help me get them "right". (I paint with the paper lying flat on a desk, not upright on an easel). One of the questions asked of me is "how do you know when a painting is done?" As I was asking myself this question, off to the side out of the corner of my eye, I reached out to pick up one of the pieces of grass. It was not loose but one painted on the surface. Question answered, it was indeed done. |
