Usually when I start a new subject or series of paintings I begin, like most artists do with a “study”. Traditionally this is a smaller quickly painted piece that is used for future reference to complete the larger more “important” painting. As I started this painting my plan was nothing more than that. But as often happens with the watercolor medium, surprises develop right before your eyes. I’ve learned over the years that when this happens I stop, take a deep breath and carefully finish the painting without wrecking it by hurrying, or trying to make it go where I had originally planned. The appearance of rain is accomplished by scratching the paper with sandpaper at the very end of the process. There is no turning back once you start and as you can imagine it is very easy to wreck the whole painting. So what started to be a quick study for a future painting has become a finished piece worthy of putting into print. Cape Meares Light is the closest lighthouse to the south of Cannon Beach. |
