Bandon Light

Description

As I study and paint our coastal lighthouses, my appreciation for their history and unique architectural characteristics grows. The Coquille River Lighthouse was completed in 1896 as a needed navigational aid to the growing timber industry. To my knowledge there are no other west coast lighthouses with their foundations so close to sea level and the punishing Pacific Ocean. How appropriate that even today it is surrounded by driftwood deposited right at its front door. It is located on the north jetty of the Coquille River near Bandon, Oregon.
