First Kiss of Sunlight

Inspiration for this oil struck while walking along the ocean’s edge as the first rays of sunlight began to illuminate the breakers. I was fascinated by the waves coming into the strong light of the sun as it began rising through the trees to the east.

I’m frequently asked how I chose whether to paint an image in watercolor or oil. My answer is, I usually know at the point of inspiration which medium will best communicate what I’m trying to say. For this painting I needed the intense whites to tell the story that oil colors provide an artist.
