Above A Salty Sea

Brown Pelicans arrive on the Northern Oregon Coast each spring reminding us winter is indeed over. They spend their summers here, sticking around well into the fall. Despite being large birds, they are skilled in flight and seemingly glide effortlessly with their wing tips nearly skimming the water’s surface. They also use the slightest wind blowing across the ocean to aid their flight, even the lift a wave provides moving through still air. I never tire of watching these gangly yet graceful birds.
To me, this watercolor is about the mood of a salty evening at the edge of the sea. After painting the individual pelicans, I felt it needed something more. The final piece of the puzzle came by adding one of our two sea stacks known as “The Needles” in the salty ocean air. At the very end, I spritzed a little gold and silver watercolor over the breakers to add some sparkle to mimic the salt filled atmosphere.
