Crash-endo

Description

Waves are often born thousands of miles away and travel far until expending their energy right before our eyes. Everything: wind, tide, lighting, and of course what’s underneath, affect them. For what it’s worth, I believe waves to be one of the most difficult subjects for an artist to get “right”. If you’re taking time to read this you probably, like me, never tire of watching them. With “Crash-endo” my hope was simply to capture the translucent water and motion of this wave exploding upward.

Interestingly, this painting was completed when a friend pointed out its similarity to Hokusai’s famous Japanese block print “The Great Wave” (sans Mt Fuji and the men paddling their boats about to be swamped). As humans we bring all of our experiences and visual memory into each moment as our lives unfold and I can’t help but think in my subconscious mind the impact of that famous artwork influenced my creativity as I composed this painting.
