Day’s End

Description

Even though I live at the beach, a “beach day” is somewhat rare in a busy life. My hope in this watercolor was to capture the end of one of those days when it’s time to pull the deck chairs together or head back down the trail to enjoy a beach fire and the sunset. This painting brings back a lot of great memories for me.
In addition to sketches, photographs and memories, I often bring some part of what I’m painting back into my studio to help complete the piece. In this case it was some of the grasses I was painting. I had some lying on the surface of the paper to help me get them “right”. (I paint with the paper lying flat on a desk, not upright on an easel). One of the questions asked of me is “how do you know when a painting is done”? As I was asking myself this question, off to the side out of the corner of my eye, I reached out to pick up one of the pieces of grass. It was not loose but one painted on the surface. Question answered, it was indeed done.
