Working On The River

Astoria has rich history as you likely know and a BIG river out front. The Columbia is the second largest in North America and is just 30 minutes from my home. There are so many stories that come to mind, like ragging across the river on a catamaran with my lifetime friend, Captain Jack and leisurely exploring upriver with my buddy Zac in his shallow draft boat. Truth is a lot of people make their living on a river of this size. These pilings could tell a few stories as well. I’ve forgotten how many canneries were on the lower Columbia in its hay day, but it was a lot! Pilings like these are up and down both sides of the river and are all that’s left of those canneries they literally once supported. I painted this just east of the Columbia River Maritime Museum which is a great place to spend a rainy day by the way.
